Microneedling, also known as collagen induction therapy, is a popular cosmetic procedure that involves using tiny needles to create controlled micro-injuries in the skin.

This process stimulates collagen and elastin production, leading to smoother, firmer, and more youthful-looking skin.

Here at Pure Body Health, we offer microneedling facial rejuvenation and Scarlet RF microneedling. In this blog, we will discuss the healing stages of microneedling, what to expect in the days after treatment and the long-term results.

Fast Facts About Microneedling

  • Microneedling is a minimally invasive procedure that uses fine needles to create tiny punctures in the skin.
  • It stimulates the skin’s natural healing process, boosting collagen and elastin production.
  • The skin becomes smoother, firmer, and appears more youthful.
  • It is effective at reducing fine lines and wrinkles, acne scars, and hyperpigmentation.
  • Beneficial for a range of skin concerns, such as acne scars, uneven skin texture, and sun damage.
  • Microneedling can improve skin texture and tone for a more even complexion.
  • The procedure is suitable for all skin types and colors.
  • It can be performed on the face, neck, and other areas of the body.
  • Minimal downtime; most patients return to normal activities within a few days.
  • Results can be enhanced by combining microneedling with other treatments, such as PRX-T33 (non-peeling chemical peel).
  • Benefits include tighter skin, improved skin texture and skin elasticity, reduction in the appearance of acne scars, boosts collagen formation and brightens skin.

Microneedling Healing Stages

Results from microneedling do not appear right away. You won’t notice a major difference in your skin the day of treatment…the real magic happens in the deeper layers of skin over time.

To help you understand the recovery process, we will break down each stage of the healing process. Here are the 4 stages of healing:

Stage 1: Immediately After Treatment (Day 1)

Immediately after microneedling treatment, you may experience some mild side effects, including redness, slight swelling, and a warm or prickling sensation (like a mild sunburn) on the treated area. These are normal reactions and typically subside within a few hours or days.

To help the skin heal properly, it’s important to avoid touching or applying makeup to the treated area on the first day. This will allow the micro-injuries to close and protect the skin from any potential bacteria.

Stage 2: Inflammation and Healing (Days 2-3)

During this stage, the skin may feel tight, dry, and slightly sensitive. This is a sign that the healing process has begun, and collagen production is underway.

To help soothe the skin during this time, we recommend using a gentle cleanser and moisturizer. Avoid using any harsh products or exfoliants as they can irritate the healing skin.

Stage 3: Skin Rejuvenation (Days 4-7)

Between days four to seven after treatment, you will start to notice improvements in your skin’s texture and tone. The micro-injuries will have healed, and the skin will look smoother and more even.

Collagen and elastin production continue during this stage, leading to further improvements in skin quality. To maintain these results, it’s essential to protect the skin from the sun by using a clean sunscreen and staying out of the direct sun.

Stage 4: Continued Improvement (Weeks 2-4)

As the weeks go by, you will continue to see improvements in your skin’s appearance. The long-term benefits of microneedling include a reduction in fine lines, wrinkles, and acne scars as collagen continues to regenerate over time.

For optimal results, it is recommended that you have 4 treatments spaced 4–6 weeks apart with maintenance appointments afterwards every 4-6 months.

No-No’s After a Microneedling Procedure

  • Do not pick or scratch at the treated area, as this can lead to scarring or infection.
  • Avoid direct sun exposure and tanning beds. Protect your skin with sunscreen and protective clothing.
  • Do not use exfoliants, scrubs, or harsh skincare products that can irritate the skin, ie.glycolic acid, retinol A and vitamin C.
  • Refrain from using makeup or cosmetics on the treated area until the skin has healed properly.
  • Avoid swimming pools or soaking in hot tubs, as the chemicals can irritate the skin.
  • Do not engage in strenuous exercise that causes excessive sweating, which can aggravate the healing skin.

Things You SHOULD Do

  • Follow all aftercare instructions
  • Keep the skin clean and moisturized.
  • Drink plenty of water to stay hydrated and help the healing process.
  • Use gentle skincare products specifically for sensitive skin that are free from harsh chemicals or fragrances.
